Profile
I love working with clay, the challenge of transforming the lump of mud into a shape or form that had existed only in my mind. Using slabs of clay, I build up a hollow form, bringing into view the image that I had "sketched" in the air. I have spent 15 years creating realistic and abstract figures, and now am exploring architectural forms. Intriguing surface texture is important to me, created through carving or layers of glazes. Stories from mythology, folklore, and science fantasy are sources of inspiration for me. In my figurative work, my intent is to capture the essence of what it means to be human, expressing without words the complexities of our lives, portraying the qualities of strength and vulnerability, joy and sorrow, love and loneliness, tenderness and despair. Working with clay is a sensual experience. Creating expressive work is a spiritual experience. And most fulfilling is when viewers sense the spirit in my work, when it speaks to them, and they recognize themselves. Resume: 1995 BFA from University of Minnesota, majoring in ceramics and sculpture. I have exhibited work in over 20 juried shows since 1994, as well as numerous non-juried shows. I have won 8 awards and ribbons, including 2 Awards of Excellence and a 3rd Place Award from the Society of Minnesota Sculptors, a 4th Place Award and Honorable Mention from the Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Exhibitions, and an Excellence in 3-D Award and a People's Choice Award from the Bloomington Art Center.
