Profile

The Beginning:

“I went to Disney World with my family when I was about 8 years old. When I walked into Main Street, there were little booths in the center of the street, where someone was lampworking using the crochet technique. That was it for me, It was magic, I think I spent hours that first day, constantly begging my parents to still be left there to watch, thankfully they agreed. Since then I’ve been fascinated with glass and its movement.”

Education:

Rosanne Palumbo lives and creates in Deer Park, Long Island NY. Rosanne is mainly a self-taught artist with some classes from college, books, videos, and a trip to Murano Italy where she observed master glass artists at work. Thus far Rosanne has studied under Glass Artitst Vittorio Costantini , Eric Goldshmidt and Robert Mickelsen. Her family throughout her childhood nourished her art. Her grandmother was an artist and jewelry designer. Rosanne and her mother currently paint murals together. You can see their painted works at www.suromuralmagic.com. Rosanne’s glass art began after a serious accident at work left her unable to walk without the aid of crutches for 3 years and continues to impede daily life. Needing a new focus in life she turned to her childhood love of glass and all things that sparkle and add brightness to her life. Rosanne holds a B.A. in Media Studies from Queens College. Her talents range from glassblowing and sculpting to jewelry design and mural painting. Rosanne is a member of the Glass Art Society and the Art League of Long Island.

Glass Art:

Artist Rosanne Palumbo creates designs using rods and/or tubes of glass melted using an oxygen/propane torch (torchwork/flameworked). In addition, designs may include the use of sheet glass, which are shaped using a kiln. This process is called fusing/slumping. All pieces are one of a kind. Some beads can take up to one hour to create. Rods of glass are melted around a mandrel (stainless steel rod). The layering of color and design elements for each bead, are created when different rods of glass are combined by moving the molten glass with various tools, as more glass is applied. Each bead is then properly annealed (brought to even temperature and slowly cooled to prevent cracking). Only after examining the finished bead can the jewelry design process begin, as each individual bead dictates its own design.

Blown and solid sculptures begin as rods or tubes of glass and take shape as they are layered and manipulated in the flame.

Fused and/or slumped works begin as design ideas. Flat sheets of glass are shaped using a combination of tools. Once each element has been chosen for color and shape, the design is arranged on the kiln shelf. It is brought up to melting temperature (about 1500 degrees) and held at that temperature until the components are fused (melted) together. The fused piece is then annealed. After inspection, depending on the design, it may be slumped onto a mold. Rosanne makes some molds herself. The piece is fired again to allow the glass to slump (melted to take shape) into the mold. When it has reached the desired shape, it is annealed and finally cooled to room temperature. At this stage, other techniques may be used to complete the design including sandblasting, etching, or painting. Each piece can take over 2 days to complete.
