I have been an artist in one medium or another since kindergarten, becoming skilled in pencils and pastels, moving on to illustration in pen and ink, oils and watercolors, and finally acrylics. Except for a critical anatomy class for animators and a few workshops I am largely self-trained. I am inspired by the works of Maxfield Parrish, Bougoureau, Alma-Tadema, Neal Adams, Frank Kelly Freas and a host of other fantasy artists. Currrently I am working exclusively in acrylics and colored pencil on works no larger than 11" x 14", though I have gone to as large as 16" x 20". My style is fantasy realism. My process goes from a thumbnail sketch to a pencil drawing, where I copy the drawing and then do a color study in colored pencil until I am sure of the composition and colors. Then I transfer the image to a base, usually a piece of illustration board or masonite, where I begin the work of undercolor, shadowing and then the final coloring. Sometimes I sketch directly onto the board. I apply effects and textures as I go in layers until I am satisfied with the result. Often I will go back to a previous work and revise it if I feel I am not satisfied with the original. I use strong colors in some places, muted ones in others, depending on the mood I am trying to convey in the work. Emotion and action are strong elements in my art, and are evoked by my own emotional response to a specific theme or element in an image or story, or some personal experience I want to share with the viewer.
I am also writing a series of science fantasy adventure novels called "Children of The Dragon". "Destiny's Forge" and the second and prequel, "To Taste The Dragon's Blood" are available now.
