Mary Clark-Camargo started doing mosaics in 2000 when she needed an interesting surface for her outdoor kitchen counter. Armed with an assortment of colorful glass tile and some pointers from the man that sold them to her she fearlessly set out to do it herself. This proved to be the beginning of a passion for glass and art that has continued grow ever since.
Mary soon started making functional yard art that quickly found it’s way onto two television shows for HGTV and one for the DIY Network .She was featured in the Pasadena Star News and Mary Englebreit’s Home Companion Magazine as well as two mosaic yearbooks .Her colorful kaleidoscopic garden balls and whimsical pique assiete style bird houses soon started turning up in high-end nurseries and garden art galleries up and down the west coast. About this time Mary discovered that she loved doing portraits of animals and launched Petraits by Mary.
Not one to rest on her laurels she succumbed to the urge to expand her repertoire and do some fine art mosaics.
This last year has found Mary doing some large-scale sculptural pieces. Using a vast assortment of exotic glass and tile as well as semi-precious stone and other “found” objects she intertwines intricate patterns that are at once abstract and organic in nature. She finds these highly decorative and complex mosaic pieces to be her new passion and spends many long hours on each one. She patiently cuts and fits thousands of pieces of glass together knowing the satisfaction is in the final result.
Mary has recently learned how to fuse glass as well as make her own ceramic tile. Because her technique is constantly evolving these elements are bound to appear in her work in the near future. Stay tuned.
