Profile
Bonnie Medearis, Artist Medium: Verre églomisé, Reverse gilding and reverse painting on glass. I am the artist for each piece submitted for display. I start with sheets of glass, clean the glass in a very meticulous manner and then begin my design. Verre églomisé is from the French term meaning glass gilded. It is a process where the backside of the glass is gilded with gold or metal leaf using an adhesive. The result is a mirror-like, reflective finish in which designs can then be engraved. The technique dates back to the pre-Roman eras, but its name is derived from 18th century French decorator Jean-Baptise Glomy who is responsible for its repopularization. The wall artistry and table tops I create are a variation of techniques using reverse gilding, reverse painting, and faux etching. Normally in painting an artist will work from the back forward. Applying the background and working out. Reverse painting and gilding is exactly opposite as the name suggests. Working first on the forward characters and filling in the background as I go. Many times I never see the art piece’s progression until finished; as the viewing side is face down while being created. This is the challenge and aspect that has me hooked. My designs are originated from nature and my imagination. Many of the pieces have rich symbolism within them inspiring the creation of the artwork itself. The desire for my art is to enrich peoples lives, bring a peace and joy to their souls and hopefully a smile to their face. I consider it a great privilege and blessing to serve others through art.
