Profile
In short, for my history seem rather longwinded…. Kiev, Ukraine was my birthplace, childhood and all that was the brightest colour-pallet. Much, though was not quite as usual as one would think. Upbringing in the realms of the Soviet Union seemed an endless stream of happiness. At every opportunity I was taken to live in places distant to my home, travelling the length and breadth of Ukraine. Images of every place engraved in my memory as if a living image. Little could a child’s comprehension grasp desperation behind these lengthy trips. Chernobyl, was a name spoken in hushed undertones for years, before the curtain of Communism had lifter, universality recognised today but at the time neglected, hundreds and thousands of people were slowly damaged by all that was around them; water they drunk, food they were eating, the cloth they wore and even the dust they negligibly brushed of their shoulder… In coming to England as a teenager I forever left a morsel of my sole behind, this loss I can not transcribe nor concur. Those left behind endeavour never to forget, yet most of whom, are sadly no longer there to visit, for the mortality amongst many of my Ukrainian pears is insatiable even today… To close I would use a statement of procured upon me by a friend: “I am not in the business of painting ‘whens’ or ‘wheres’. Concepts do not simply present themselves in the hope that they will be visualised. Quite conversely, the visualisation is the starting point. My paintings are the images that are engrained on to my mind when I close my eyes, which reside in full living colour, waiting to be drawn from memory.” Many people may be born in to the shadow of great events, and while this may shape their character, it often works to foster an unusual appreciation of the small and personal. Paintings ‘by a person from a place’ may well be of obvious provenance, sometimes this heritage is less marked, not overthrown but coupled with the necessity to create paintings ‘of a person from a place.’
