Instead of a biography I want to share a few thoughts.
The Greek word for amateur is “erasitehnis”. It becomes from the word “erastis” meaning lover and “tehni” meaning art, in the female gender. The word in its semiotics suggests that amateurs are the lovers of art.
Personally, I believe that the relationship developed between lovers creates deep and strong feelings and leads to an unpredictable path, full of passion, with many hidden disappointments and great pleasures. It's a dominant relationship that gets right inside you, without leaving space for anything else. Many times it turns to be the most exhausting, demanding and at the same time rewarding relationship, that can ever be achieved.
That's why I mentioned the word “erasitehnis”. It describes very accurately the relationship of an amateur to art. According to the above etymology the amateur is the lover of art, not her husband. So I consider my self an “erasitehnis” and I really enjoy it.
In a way, being an amateur, is an act of protest against our era. You see, everybody specializes in a small area, gets professionalism on a specific subject and loose the whole picture. If we do the same with art and leave her in the hands of professionals or specialists or experts she will become another boring wife. She will lose the magic touch of being a mistress.
Anyhow I love my wife, I have two daughters and I enjoy being with her. But when I become an “erasitehnis”, I feel like cheating on her… and I loved it.
Finally I believe that art is not a matter of expertise or professionalism, but a matter of expressing your self. To pass out in the world something, that no matter why, you want to get it out of your chest. I can’t imagine that only professionals reserve that right. It’s awkward to think, that there is a tribe of professional EXPRESSionists. Everybody living on earth surely has something to say, to express, to shout it loud and therefore surely can become an erasitehnis.
