Born in California in 1948, he earned his liberal arts degree from Pasadena Nazarene College and then furthered his studies at the Fuller Theological Seminary. He studied art with Baltimore native turned California transplant Charles Cross who told him that if he worked at it for ten years, he could make it as an artist. In 1979, Hatfield visited the Chicago Art Institute and was inspired by the Tiepolo mural there; Tiepolo was the same artist whose works earlier inspired John Singer Sargent. After spending time in New Mexico, he returned to California for more studies and ultimately achieved the enormous success he enjoys today. His colors produce a quality of gentle light that bathes his work and seems highly spiritual. Hatfield says of his paintings, "It's the color that evokes the mood, the feeling--more so than the rendering. Rendering can be taught, as can design and the craft of handling oil paint. But color is very difficult to transmit from student to teacher." This is number 98/300.
