The old Cherokee Capitol Building, built in 1870 and remodeled after being damaged by fire in 1928, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. After statehood in 1907 it served as the Cherokee County Courthouse until 1979 when it was returned to the Cherokee Nation to house the tribe's court system.
