Imaginism - New Art Movement January 2007

Much in the same way that Claude Monet began the “Impressionism” art movement back in the 1860s, as a photographic artist I have pioneered, and continue to pioneer a unique style which I term “Imaginism”.

Unrelated to the Russian poetic movement of the same name, although my images are often presented in association with poetry (either that of my own or others), pertaining to either the individual image or a series.

I hope that this will be the beginning of an era, and that the “Imaginism” art movement (perhaps even in compliment to the existing poetic movement), will bring artists together both photographic and otherwise.

The primarily theme of my own artwork is that of “Erotism”, and although related to “Erotica”, I choose to carefully distinguish one form the other. My work borders on “experimental”, focusing less on the subject and more on the formal aspects of the image, the light, movement and composition. Especially movement, which gives the image an intense atmosphere, masking the formal subject and replacing it with sensuality and suspense.

The objective of “Imaginism” and “Imaginistic Art”, is to encourage the viewer to see beyond what is actually being presented. To see what actually is not being shown. My images have been described as “surreal”, “manifesting within a dream” and even as “a gift from heaven”. Each viewer should and will see my work in a different context, but the one thing in common for all, is that each image conjures a question and will be viewed and remembered beyond its actual physical content.

I would welcome contact from any artist, working in any media, that feels his work fits within this movement, and would be interested in evolving the movement to an international level of recognition.

I am just starting to connect with the "art world," after many years apart from it. I am writing because I've been a teacher for 20 years and actually I have written stories, poems, with a theme of "imagination." The song. Imagine.. my favorite as well. I am excited about your idea of trying to begin a new phase in the art world. At what better time would imagining a better world, way, be appropriate? I am a believer that whatever can be imagined, can be. I am pasting below, a poem I wrote after my own child was born 15 years ago. I had written it for her, but also with the special education students in mind, that I had had the pleasure to know over the years. It seems simple at first, but to me it carries a very strong and important message. It is how I've seen the world, and have also survived many personal "hardships," over the years.. seeing beyond what is.. seeing what can be, what will be, etc. So here is my poem. I have written children's book, not yet published, also.. including the themes of individuality, imagination, and positive ideas. I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis after I was blinded in one eye, following the birth of my daughter in 1992. That was after I wrote this poem, but I am glad to feel the way I do.. because imagination, being positive, has helped me through so much.

Currently, I've lost and gained back my eyesight several times. I've lost and gained back my ability to walk, etc.. many times. I try to roll it off. I went through a divorce when my daughter was 2 and I have basically raised her on my own, with MS, since then. Two years ago, a teenager now, she went back to live with her dad in NJ. It was the right thing for her. So, I am now living a more single life than ever. I have been reconnecting to my art, also working on my stories and poems, and I'm hoping to share them with others some day.

I am actually not going to be teaching and may be on disability this year. I am sort of in denial about that, because most the time I am not disabled. I have a remissive form of MS which comes and wrecks havoc, then leaves. It's crazy. I apologize for writing so much. Just want to somehow connect with other artist and your idea about, "imagination," is very much how I feel as well. Otherwise, I would not have been able to see all the good things my special ed students were ABLE to do.. I would not have been able to turn MS and being blind for months at a time, into a catalyst to re-claim my life, freedom, and peace. My marriage was extremely violent by the way. :(

Here is the poem. May seem simple, but the last line is the key to it:

(an MS online magazine actually published it on the site)

"Pie in the Sky"

by Alexandra A.

I think of pie in the sky,
why do I think of pie in the sky?
I just lie, and lie, as clouds go by---
And dream, and look, and wonder, why?

Thanksgiving approaches,
there’ll be pies everywhere,
Apple, and cherry, cranberry, and pear;
How can I stand to just sit here alone?
I must look into the sky, to find pies of my own.

Mother and Grandma know what I would choose,
Over turkey and stuffing, or carrots and stews.
Pies start me dreaming, and clouds,
I have clowned…
Are full of pies, and daydreams,
just waiting to be found.

A bear may go by with a very proud stride,
I’d dare take a ride on the back of his hide.
Why do I dream and see pies in the sky?
The bear likes Honey Pie,
now that’s something I’d like to try.

In winter I bundle up and lie in the snow,
Watching the crisp, clear sky,
and the cool winds blow.
There’s a little snow fairy on an icicle pie,
Full of peppermint and gingerbread,
and frosting, and rye.

Then the spring bring raindrops,
and flowers, and rhyme.
Up the very tallest stem I venture to climb.
To a Carrot and Easter Egg Marshmallow Pie,
Of course there are candy bars stuck to the side.

The hot and sticky summer doesn’t
stop my dreams of pies,
There’s one that I’m sure you’d love, just as I.
It’s made of ice cream and hot fudge,
and toppings galore.
It’s cold and delicious, with peanuts and more.

Whatever the season, whatever my mood---
I can stare at the sky, above, and dream of this food.
My favorite choice, as I’ve mentioned before,
Are PIES and MORE PIES,
All the pies I adore.

Don’t let anyone stop you,
there are dreams in the sky,
For all to see, for all to love,
you won’t have to ask, “Why?”
The “Why?” I refer to is
THIS one you see……………..
“Why is the sky blue?”
That means NOTHING to me.

Just want to support your work, and ideas. Good Luck to you!

Peace,

:) Alexandra
